As with all his works, the Concertos of Marc Monnet disconcert – because they are never based on established reference points or generally accepted rules. Marc Monnet prefers the unknown, being inspired by the shock he gets from Merce Cunningham’s dance, Jean-Luc Godard’s cinema or Antonin Artaud’s texts; hence this inimitable and constantly changing style, which seeks new sensations and an almost experimental virtuosity. He often does this in a provocative spirit that plays with our expectations in order to better thwart them. The performers on this recording (Tedi Papavrami, François-Xavier Roth, Marc Coppey and Christian Arming) are close friends of the composer, knowing both the man and his style. As a result, their entire interpretation breathes a sense of total freedom, supporting an “integrated” vision of soloist and orchestra where these are no longer in opposition but reinforce the interdependence of each other’s freedom.
