The music of Johannes Brahms requires a combination of ardor and intimacy from its interpreters. French pianist Philippe Bianconi and Polish conductor Michal Nesterowicz, at the helm of the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, bring exactly this to their recording of the two Piano Concertos. A quarter of a century separates the writing of the Concertos. The first, in D minor, has an unbridled quality, at times violent and almost angry – the anger of an impetuous young man, in his early twenties, still envisaging a career as a concert pianist. The second, in B flat, exudes the serenity of the mature Brahms, now in his forties. Philippe Bianconi captures perfectly every expressive dimension of these two works, from the tragic undertow of op. 15 to the lyrical, poetic atmosphere of op. 83.
